Another article of interest in the May Atlantic is "The Reconstruction Period: the Ku Klux movement," by William Garrott Brown 91. The history of the whole period of the Reconstruction of the Southern States after the Civil War is, especially in the North, comparatively little known. The "Ku Klux Klan," a secret fraternity organized to oppose the carpet bag politicians and to prevent the dominance of the negroes, was a society unique and curious in its aims and work, and an account of it, as well as of the state of southern politics from which it arose, is full of most dramatic interest. Mr. Brown is well qualified to deal with his subject from the Southern and therefore the most intimate point of view; his article is clean, thoughtful and vigorous.
"The Rivalry of Nations," by E. A. Start '93, is another article which deserves mention. In is an instalment of a continued history of present-day world politics, and as such possesses great current interest.
The following is the detailed list of articles by Harvard graduates which appear in the May magazines. The list may not be entirely complete, since the many magazines which deal with especial topics have, of necessity, been excluded from consideration.
