NEW YORK, April 26. -- The international cable chess match between the representatives of Columbia, Harvard, Yale and Princeton and those of Oxford and Cambridge, seems at present to be going in favor of the Americans. C. T. Rice '01 (H) and F. H. Sewall '02 (C) easily defeated their respective opponents, Grundy (O) and Lane (O). As yet there is no decisive advantage apparent in the other games.
The Englishmen won the toss, electing to play white on the odd boards. The pairings were as follows:
1. E. R. Perry (H) vs. Colman (O).
2. K. G. Falk (C) vs. Wiles (C).
3. F. H. Sewall (C) vs. Lane (O).
4. C. T. Rice (H) vs. Grundy (O).
5. J. B. Hunt (P) vs. Davidson (O).
6. H. A. Keeler (C) vs. Wright (C).
Keeler of Columbia was substituted by mutual agreement for J. F. Sawin (Y), who failed to appear.
