The Yale track squad has now been training for six weeks. It looks at present as if Yale would be acceptionally strong in the field events, but weaker in the runs.
For the shot-put Yale has F. G. Beck '03 M.S. and R. Sheldon '02S. Beck is making better distance than ever before and it is possible that he will equal the world's record before the end of the season. Sheldon is a close second. G. S. Stillman '01 is the leading candidate in the hammer-throw. Last year he was bothered by the turn in the throwing circle and his best throws were fouled by stepping outside the limits. He has been coached by John Flanagan, the world's champion in this event, and has now nearly overcome this difficulty, getting a clean throw of from 140 to 150 feet. F. G. Brown, Jr., '01 and H. P. Olcott '01 of the eleven and G. A. Goss '03 are also working on the hammer. Brown, although new to the work, is developing fast and may make second place by the last of May.
In the pole-vault, J. H. Hord '01, D. P. Thompson '03S. and C. C. Pinney '03S. are the most promising men. Hord has made 11 feet and the other two men have already come close to that record on the indoor work.
In the high jump it looks as if Yale would be strong this year. J. S. Spraker '02 L.S., G. F. Victor '04 and D. W. Franchot '03S., are all doing over 6 feet in gymnasium practice. Last fall Spraker went over 6 feet, 3 inches in an exhibition jump, but knocked the bar off with his arm.
In the broad jump, Spraker has gone over 22 feet frequently. Devon has a record of 22 feet 6 inches. J. B. Thomas '02, the hurdler is fairly sure for 22 feet, although he fell considerably below this in the fall games.
Candidates for the runs are less promising. D. W. Franchot '03S., a candidate for the high-jump, and E. J. Clapp '04, a hurdler, have developed well, however. Franchot won the half-mile in the B. A. A. games last month, and the mile from a 25-yard handicap, in the Philadelphia games on March 2. Both distances were made in fast time.
In the dashes there are C. Dupee '01, N. H. Hargrave '02S., W. A. Lilley, Jr., '03S., D. Boardman '02, R. M. Ingham '03S., and J. R. Hunter '02. Dupee expects to be able to cover the hundred yards in ten seconds flat. Hargrave ought not to be slower than 10 1-5 seconds. Boardman is in good shape and will probably be able to do better than ever before in the quarter and the 220 yards. J. B. Thomas and E. J. Clapp are the leading candidates for the hurdles.
The whole squad of long distance men are at present training together and there has been no opportunity to try them in their special distances. Yale is probably weakest in these distance runs. W. D. Waldron '03, B. G. Teel '02, L. L. Gay '01 and W. B. Weston '03 of last year's team are most prominent.
