PHILADELPHIA, PA., Nov. 9, 1901. Harvard and Pennsylvania met on Franklin Field this afternoon for their annual football game. It was a beautiful day for the great contest and an immense crowd of spectators was within the enclosure. Referee McClung blew the whistle and called play at 2.08 o'clock. Harvard's supporters were full of confidence and they apparently had good grounds for their hope. Pennsylvania has not beaten Harvard since 1897, and this year Pennsylvania's eleven is far below the average. The air of over-confidence was apparent on all sides. The Harvard players outweighed Pennsylvania nearly fifteen pounds to a man.
The stands surrounding the field filled slowly and at 2 p.m, the time fixed for starting the game, there were 12,000 persons present. The sun was hidden by clouds which made the day a little raw. The Harvard squad came on the field at 1.55 and were loudly cheered. Three minutes later Pennsylvania appeared on the field and were also given a fine ovation.
The teams lined up as follows: Umpire, Dashiel of Annapolis, Referee, McClung of Lehigh. Captain Campbell won the toss and chose the west goal with a moderate wind at his back. Reynolds kicked off at eight minutes after two. The ball landed on Harvard's five yard line and was immediately punted back to middle-field. Gardiner made five yards around Harvard's right end. Two more yards were made and then Pennsylvania fumbled, Harvard getting the ball. Harvard could not advance the ball and Graydon, in attempting to kick, fumbled the ball. Davidson fell on it. Pennsylvania bucked the line a couple of times and then Harvard was penalized ten yards for offside play. This brought the ball to Harvard's 20 yard line. A quarterback kick failed and it was Harvard's ball on her own 15 yard line. Graydon kicked to the 45 yard line. Pennsylvania failed to gain and an exchange of kicks found the ball on Harvard's five yard line. The latter was penalized half the distance for offside play. Then Graydon kicked to Pennsylvania's 45 yard line. Dale took the ball around Harvard's right end for 13 yards and Reynolds kicked to Harvard's 10 yard line, where it was fumbled. Pennsylvania got the ball a moment later. Teas let the ball slip from his fingers and Harvard regained possession. Harvard again made a series of line plunges and took the ball down the field to her own 40 yard line. Graydon made a 20 yard run to Pennsylvania's 50 yard line. Then Harvard continued their gains and soon had the ball on Pennsylvania's 30 yard line. Putnam took the ball around right end for 8 yards and twice through the centre for 5 yards more. Two more plunges by Harvard's backs landed the ball 5 yards in front of Pennsylvania's goal. Graydon made the touchdown at 2.38 p. m. Cutts kicked the goal. Score, Harvard 6, Pennsylvania 0. Pennsylvania kicked off and Harvard immediately began again to rush the ball. In a half dozen centre plays Harvard took the ball to middlefield. Graydon hurdled Pennsylvania's line and took the ball 30 yards before he was downed by Howard. Donaldson left the game and was replaced by Mitchell. Graydon made a second touchdown at 2.46. A short run around Pennsylvania's left end had brought the ball to Pennsylvania's 10 yard line and Pennsylvania held only for a moment. Cutts kicked goal. Score, Harvard, 12, Pennsylvania, 0. Pennsylvania's kick-off was downed on Harvard's 25 yard line. Harvard carried the ball to their own 50 yard line by short plunges. Pennsylvania got the ball there for offside play. Reynolds punted and Marshall fumbled. Mitchell picked up the ball and ran 15 yards for Pennsylvania's first touchdown. Davidson kicked the goal. Score, Harvard 12, Pennsylvania 6. Davidson ran Harvard's kick back to Pennsylvania's 20 yard line. Pennsylvania failed to gain and kicked to Harvard's 50 yard line. Graydon and Ristine took the ball through Pennsylvania's centre for 10 yards each. Graydon made 5 yards, Ristine 5. Putnam took the ball around Pennsylvania's left to the 15 yard line. On three more plays the ball was on Pennsylvania's 8 yard line. Graydon took the ball within a few inches of the goal line. On the next try Graydon made the third touchdown at 3.10 p. m. Cutts missed an easy goal. Score, Harvard 17, Pennsylvania, 6. Graydon ran the kick-off back 35 yards. Ristine was thrown for a loss. Harvard punted to Pennsylvania's 35 yard line. Pennsylvania failed to gain, and Reynolds punted. Marshall ran the ball back 30 yards to Pennsylvania's 45 yard line. Ristine was here given the ball and went around Pennsylvania's right end for 40 yards. Harvard scored another touchdown at 3.30. The punt-out was a failure. Score, Harvard 22, Pennsylvania 6. Pennsylvania kicked off and Harvard returned the kick. Dale ran the ball back 20 yards to Harvard's 15 yard line where time was called, Harvard having regained the ball on downs. Score at the end of the half, Harvard 22, Pennsylvania 6. SECOND HALF. Harvard kicked off at 3.40. The kick was returned to Pennsylvania's 30 yard line. Snook took Dale's place at right half. Pennsylvania failed to gain and Reynolds punted high. Harvard had the ball on Pennsylvania's 35 yard line. Pennsylvania was penalized 10 yards for offside play. Pennsylvania got the ball on downs on her own 25 yard line. Reynolds punted to midfield. Jones took Ristine's place at right half for Harvard, and Thomas took Metzger's place at left end for Pennsylvania. Harvard then began her line attack and took the ball down the field to Pennsylvania's 20 yard line on short plunges. At this point Pennsylvania was penalized 5 yards for interference, but a moment later got the ball on her own 17 yard line on a fumble. On the first play, however, a bad pass gave Harvard the ball on Pennsylvania's 5 yard line. At 3.53 Graydon made Harvard's fifth touchdown. Cutts kicked a difficult goal. Score, Harvard 28, Pennsylvania 6. Bowditch ran the kick-off back 33 yards to Harvard's 40 yard line. Four centre plays brought the ball to the middle of the field but here the ball was given to Pennsylvania for off-side play. A moment later Pennsylvania fumbled and it was again Harvard's ball on Pennsylvania's 45 yard line. Putnam made 13 yards around left end. Off-side play gave Harvard 10 more yards. Graydon twice plunged through centre and on the next play landed the ball almost on the goal line. He was given the ball again and this time hurdled Pennsylvania's line for Harvard's sixth touchdown. The punt out was fumbled. Harvard received the next kick-off 15 yards from her own goal line and began a series of fierce line plunges. Harvard took the ball slowly down the field into Pennsylvania's territory and the strain began to tell on the players. Thomas was taken out and Ludes was sent in at Pennsylvania's left end. Lawrence was substituted for Cutts at Harvard's right tackle. Bennett also left the game and McCabe took his place. Jordan took McCabe's place at centre for Pennsylvania. Harvard then sent Burgess in for Bowditch and Mifflin for Putnam. Play was resumed but Pennsylvania's fresh players could not stop Harvard's attack. On Pennsylvania's 15 yard line Pennsylvania got the ball for holding but failed to gain. Reynolds punted to midfield. Pennsylvania was again penalized for offside play on the part of Mitchell, who was a frequent offender. He was taken out and Baird was put in his place. Harvard sent in Baldwin in place of Marshall. Pennsylvania was given the ball in midfield for offside play and a quarterback kick brought the ball to Harvard's 25 yard line in Pennsylvania's possession. Kellar here took Captain Davidson's place. The home players at this juncture began to play fiercely and took the ball to Harvard's 25 yard line. Gardiner attempted a goal fron field but the kick was blocked.
