Freshman Football.

Saturday afternoon the Freshman football squad was given the first severe practice of the season. After the ordinary preliminary work, practice games were played between several of the teams. First team of squad A played third team of squad B, and the two second teams of squads A and B also lined up against each other. The ball was given alternately to one side and then the other, so little scoring was possible. The men played with good spirit, and some of the individual work was excellent, though usually at the expense of team play. The two second teams were rather evenly matched, but the first team of squad A was easily superior to its opponents.

Toward the end of the practice the first team of Squad B lined up against the University team as it played in the second half of the Bates game. The ball was given to the University eleven during almost the entire play, in order to give the Freshmen practice in defensive work. Fumbling on the part of the University team marred the game throughout and only one touchdown was made. The Freshmen did not score. The work of the Freshman team was good, considering the earliness of the season, although the usual faults of slow starting and lack of team play were in evidence. The Freshmen lined up as follows: Wheeler r.e., Mills r.t., R. A. Derby r.g., Cutter c., A. L. Derby l.g., Sard, Hopkins l.t., Pritchett l.e., Bunting r.h.b., de Rahm l.h.b., Callaway q.b., Leatherby f.b.
