Yale Bicentennial

NEW HAVEN, October 22.-The Yale bicentennial exercise were continued this forenoon in Battell Chapel. President Cyrus Northrup delivered an address on "Yale in its Relation to the Development of the Country." He was followed by President D.C. Gilman, who spoke on "Yale in its Relation to Science and Letters."

In the afternoon the football games were played on Yale Field before fifteen thousand spectators. The regular Yale eleven defeated Bates by the score of 21 to 0. The Yale team played a strong and fast game in the first half, but later weakened and lost chances to score by fumbling and off-side play. Bates narrowly missed a field goal from placement in the second half. The game between the graduates team and the scrub proved the greater attraction. The most prominent players of a dozen years past were in the line up, including Walter Camp, McClung, Chamberlain, Butterworth Heffelfinger, Brown, Throne, and others from the recent teams. The brilliancy of their individual playing was largely offset by lack of team work. The graduates won by a score of 12 to 0.

At 4.30 in the Hyperion theatre Professor Horatio Parker's "Hora Novissima" was performed by the Gounod Society of New Haven. In the evening the campus was illuminated, and scenes from the history of the college were presented under the auspices of the Yale Dramatic Association. A chorus of three hundred voices led in singing Yale songs.
