The practice yesterday showed a decided slump in the playing. The second eleven kept the ball in the first's territory most of the time, and scored a touchdown on a 70 yard run by Mackay. The game was often delayed by interference and offside play in the line. The backs were slow in starting and did not keep their feet well; and the interference was late in forming and did not hold together. The first team's line did not hold on punts and allowed the second to break through and block several kicks. There was again far too much fumbling and inaccuracy in the handling of the ball. Much of the poor playing may be due to the fact that only five men of Wednesday's team played on the first eleven.
Roberts played centre on the second and was fairly effective, but was too eager and delayed the game by interfering. Boyd punted well, getting the ball off quickly on poor passes.
A. C. Lyon 2L., who played half and fullback on the Iowa State College eleven, was out yesterday for the first time but did not get into the line-up. Robinson injured his neck and shoulder early in the game and will not be able to play again for some time.
The second kicked off to Swann, who ran the ball back 20 yards. Swann, Derby and Mifflin advanced the ball for short gains, but the second held, and Mifflin was forced to punt. The kick was blocked and the second secured the ball. After a few gains the second was held for downs. Derby, Mifflin and Swann gained about 15 yards, when a poor pass caused a loss and forced Mifflin to punt. Mackay caught the ball on his 35 yard line and ran 70 yards for a touchdown.
Marshall caught the kick-off and ran it back 10 yards. Boyd punted to Matthews who was tackled on the 45 yard line, when time was called.
In the next half the kick-off went over the line. The second punted from the 20 yard line to Derby, who gained 17 yards. Short gains advanced the ball towards the goal line where a fumble resulted in a loss, and Mifflin had to punt. Again the line did not hold, and the second secured the ball. On the next play Boyd punted to Matthews who dropped the ball when tackled, the second again securing it. After a failure to gain Boyd again punted. Kernan gained five yards through right tackle, and on the next play punted to Matthews. The first gained a few yards through the line and then Kernan ran around right end for 25 yards. The second held for downs, and Boyd punted out of danger. Time was called without further scoring.
