The John Sargent Prize.

The John Sargent prize of one hundred dollars for the general encouragement of translations of the classics is offered this year for the best metrical translation of Horace's ninth ode in book three.

The prize was first offered in 1886-87 by John Osborne Sargent, of New York. of the class of 1880 and was endowed in his memory by his daughter in 1892. The one to be translated is selected each year by the Department of Classics. In 1899-1900 the prize was not awarded. The competition is open to all under graduates. The translations must be handed to the Recorder on or before May 1.
