In anticipation of the dual races with the Newell to be held on May 30, several more candidates for the Weld graded crews have come out and others are expected. This will necessitate a number of changes in the boats during the next week. The senior crew has lately been greatly strengthened by Burton, who came down from the University squad, and by the return of Locke, Holden, and Ivins, who had temporarily stopped rowing.
The eights rowed yesterday as follows:
Senior -- Stroke, Locke; 7, Brainerd; 6, Burton; 5, Grew; 4, Holden; 3, Ivins; 2, Colby; bow, G. Blake.
Intermediate--Stroke, Wadsworth; 7, Richardson; 6, Cudahy; 5, Loud; 4, Covel; 3, Morrison; 2, McGrath; bow, Lovejoy.
Junior -- Stroke, T. D. Roberts; 7, Francis; 6, Farlow; 5, Bartlett; 4, Shippee; 3, Morse; 2, Barnes; bow, Stedman.
The three graded eights at the Newell are rowing now every day. The senior crew is fairly well together and row with some life, but the intermediate and junior crews are not at all up to the standard of the corresponding Weld crews. This is probably due to the fact that the orders of the two boats have been very unsettled and some of the men are new to their positions. The crews rowed yesterday as follows:
Senior--Stroke, Brownell; 7, Morris; 6, Gale; 5, Plate; 4, R. Lawrence; 3, Swaim; 2, Smith; bow, Bolling; cox., Jackson.
Intermediate -- Stroke, Boardman; 7, Nichols; 6, Gregg; 5, Rainsford; 4, Brigham; 3, Ware; 2, Champollion; bow, Jackson; cox., Shattuck.
Junior--Stroke, W. R. Lawrence; 7, Dabney; 6, Emory; 5, Pope; 4, Sweetser; 3, Williams; 2, Knight; bow, Letchworth; cox., Carleton.
The Weld launch "Veritas," which has been unused for several days on account of the lack of an engineer was put into commission again yesterday. Charles Pattee, who was the engineer of the "John Harvard," has been engaged for the remainder of the season. The Park Commissioners have finally given permission to moor both launches, as formerly, at the Western avenue bridge, below the University boat house, instead of at the Boylston street bridge, where they have lain thus far this year.
