The Lampoon.

A wittier number of the Lampoon than that which was issued yesterday has not appeared for some time. The reader laughs because he has to, not to get his money's worth, as has at times been the case; and an additional attraction lies in the illustrations, which are for the most part either well drawn or amusing.

One of the cleverest pieces in the number is an adaptation of "Paul Revere's Ride." The subject contains many possibilities, but the exhaustive way in which it is treated seems rather needless. The time-honored parody on college professors is not absent, and in this case its pointedness is its best excuse.

Of the illustrations those on the first and last pages are by far the best. The centrepiece relies wholly upon its amusing suggestions for its effectiveness, and succeeds admirable.
