Baseball Practice.

The baseball practice yesterday was held under most unfavorable conditions, as the cold weather and strong wind made accurate fielding very difficult. The diamond was in fair condition, though the new layer of dirt which was put on the base-lines during the recess is not yet thoroughly packed. After half an hour's batting practice at the nets the men were given their regular work in batting and fielding on the University diamond. Kernan and Reid started in the battery positions and later gave place to McDonald and Eldridge. J. D. Clark and Kendall played first base, Fincke second, Coolidge shortstop, G. C. Clark third, and Jaynes, Stillman, Ewer, Christenson and Wendell in the outfield. Loughlin, Christenson, Kendall, Wendell, Reid, J. D. Clark and Stillman were given chances at batting and base-running. Kernan and McDonald held the batters down well. The base-running lacked dash, partly on account of the cold, wet day. The infield played fairly well, especially Coolidge and G. C. Clark. The outfielders threw quickly and fairly accurately, but were not at all sure in their fielding, except on balls batted directly at them. The team is beginning to show good judgment in handling the ball, and better team work.
