Dr. Alexander Agassiz's third letter, reporting the progress of his explorations in the Pacific, has reached the United States Commissioner of Fish and Fisheries at Washington. It was written from Suava Harbor, Fiji Islands on December 11, 1899.
Since the last report, soundings of great interest and scientific value have been made. One haul reached a depth of 4173 fathoms, and the discovery was made that a variety of sponge, found hitherto only in comparatively shallow water, exists at this great depth.
Much time has been spent by the party in making detailed observations of various claims of volcanic islands, their general course and features being noted by soundings where the crests are below the surface. Many data have been gathered which prove that these island groups were formerly connected.
The expedition is now probably near the Marshall Islands.
