In an editorial on the subject of sophomore societies, the alumni weekly speaks of several points, which it considers should be brought out more clearly. It states that the stops taken thus far are in no way a solution of the question, but merely a slight step in the right direction. The matter is not one between the faculty and the undergraduates--in fact the faculty have been careful to make the undergraduates feel that the solution of the evil is with them entirely; while the undergraduates for their part have done their best to remedy matters, but have failed to understand thoroughly the situation.
The senior class of the Yale Medical School has elected as officers: President, F. F. Maloney; Vice-president, T. F. Maher; Secretary and Treasurer, E. F. Hamlin.
The University Club, which has been closed on account of repairs, was opened last week. As its first "open night" on Tuesday a reception was given to all newly elected members. Quartets from the Glee and Banjo Clubs were also present and the returns of the election were reported.
Among the recent gifts to the university have been the following: $10,000 to found the Cuyler Fellowship, presented in memory of Thomas do Witt Cuyler, '81, by his brothers and sisters; the Jacob Cooper prize in Greek Philosophy, presented by Prof. A. A. Cook; From Mrs. I. H. Bromley, the sum of $5000, the income of which is to be devoted to a course of lectures on journalism, literature and public affairs.
Professor Charles J. Bartlett, Pathologist at the Yale Scientific School, has been appointed City Medical Examiner of New Haven, to succeed the late Moses C. White.
A Sophomore basketball league has been formed, which intends to take a trip as far as Florida in the Christmas vacation, playing various games along its route. M. A. Finch '02 S is captain of the team, and C. Betman '08, manager.
The following men were chosen deacons from the Sophomore and Junior classes of the Sheffield Scientific School: 1901 S., S. Hay, W. M. Finoke, and J. F. Ferry; 1902 S., G. W. Butts, Jr., R. Kingsley and H. N. Pease.
About twenty Japanese students of the university met on Nov. 3 to celebrate the anniversary of the birth of the Emperor of Japan. A recent edict of the Emperor's was read and national songs were sung.
