BOWDOIN DEFEATED, 12-0.

An Improvement in Individual Playing. Undeveloped Team Work.

The Harvard eleven defeated Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon by the score of 12 to 0. The game showed a great improvement in offensive play. The team was able to make steady gains through Bowdoin's line by straight centre plays and for the first time made many successful end runs. The defensive work, on the other hand, was weak at times, Bowdoin making many gains through the centre of the line by a formation somewhat resembling the old revolving wedge, in which tackle carried the ball through a hole made in the other side of the line. The gains thus made were not successive, however, and seldom of any considerable length. Harvard's line although showing increased ability to open up holes, in its interference was not effective enough, and the runner, in breaking through, failed in many cases to follow the interference designated by the signals. Few substitutes were played and the game was marked by an entire absence of fumbles, and only one off-side play occurred.

The work of the backs was good. Kendall made three twenty-five yard runs around right end in the second half, and throughout the game his line bucking was successful, although he had an inclination to leave his interference. Graydon hit the line effectively and found the holes accurately, but could not keep his feet after getting through. Ellis, although not up to his form of last year, was a good ground gainer. Sawin stuck to his interference admirably, making one end run of forty yards and another of twenty yards by a dodging run in an open field. Daly and Fincke ran the team with good judgment and made the play faster than heretofore. J. Lawrence was a little over-anxious at the start, but soon settled down and played a strong and aggressive game. Hollingsworth played with a great deal of life, opening large holes, and several times getting through and breaking up Bowdoin's close formation play. Blagden played too high and often failed to down the runner after tackling him. The ends were very successful in getting down under punts and Campbell did some effective tackling in one or two cases when runners succeeded in passing right end. Kernan's punts were not very long, although he gained an average of ten yards on each exchange. They were well placed, however, and could not be run back. Ellis punted a little too high for distance.

Kendall kicked off to Upton who ran twenty yards. Bowdoin gained ten yards by her close formation play but Harvard held for two downs and Bowdoin punted. Kernan gained ten yards on his return punt and J. Lawrence recovered the ball on Bowdoin's fumble. Graydon and Kendall then made a series of short plunges which took the ball to the three yard line. Kernan easily broke through left tackle and scored the first touchdown after five minutes of play. J. Lawrence kicked the goal. Daly returned the kick-off sixty yards, and Bowdoin got the ball on her thirty-five yard line. An exchange of punts, several short gains through the Harvard tackles, and Hunt's twenty-five yard run around Harvard's right end gave Bowdoin the ball in the middle of the field. The half then closed.

Daly was injured slightly in the first half, and Fincke took his place in the second. Sawin and Ellis were also substituted for Kernan and Graydon. Soon after the kick-off Kendall circled left end for twenty-five yards, Fincke's interference helping him greatly. Ellis and Kendall then took the ball slowly toward the goal by line plunges, and Kendall carried it, over the line by a three yard buck through right tackle. J. Lawrence kicked the goal. Soon after the kick-off Kendall ran twenty-five yards around left end. Sawin made thirty yards around right end and Kendall circled left for twenty more. Ellis's plunges then took the ball to the five yard line, but the half ended before the touchdown could be made.
