The playing of the first eleven in practice yesterday was more or less discouraging. The offensive play lacked spirit, the interference was poor, and the defense was broken down for the first time this season. The second eleven, on the contrary, has developed a great amount of team-play, which is the more creditable because the material available is being constantly shifted. Although the guards are inexperienced in running with the ball, the guards-back formation has been adopted with very gratifying results.
Hallowell and Sawin were given a day's rest yesterday, and Burden directed the practice from the side-lines. Boal appeared in football clothes, but did not take part in the practice. Reid, Parker, Gierasch and Fincke were all in the line-up. The centre of the line was unexpectedly weak. So long as Burnett was in the game, the forwards were able to break through fast enough to stop the guards-back play before it started, but towards the end of the first half, gains were made steadily through Sargent, Hollingsworth and Barnard.
In the fifteen and five-minute halves played, the first eleven scored three times, and the second once. The first eleven started to play a kicking game, and, as the second could not rush the ball back, soon carried it down the field for a touchdown. The 'Varsity scored one more touchdown soon after on brilliant running by Gierasch. Poor interference on the kick-off failed to carry the ball down the field. Strong defensive play by the second held the first for downs, but the guards-back formation could not gain. Exchanges of punts followed, and, one of Warren's kicks being blocked, Peyton secured the ball on the first eleven's twenty-five yard line. The guards-back plays worked well, and the 'Varsity was unable to prevent Lee and Rainsford from gaining their distance. Ground given for offside play brought the ball near the line, and the second carried it over for the first time this season.
Today secret practice will begin and no one will be allowed within the grounds.
The line-up yesterday was as follows:
