Sigourney Butler '77 died of pneumonia at his home in Boston on Tuesday evening.

Mr. Butler was born in Boston on October 24, 1857. He prepared for college at Hopkinson's School, graduated from Harvard with the class of 1877 and from the Law School in 1880. He was soon afterward admitted to the bar and for many years practiced both in Quincy and in Boston.

Mr. Butler became interested in politics as a supporter of the Democratic party. He was second comptroller of the United States Treasury during President Cleveland's first administration, and later was obliged to decline the position of private secretary to the President because of legal duties. He was a member of the board of visitors to West Point, president of the Young Men's Democratic Club of Massachusetts, secretary of the Boston Bar Association and attorney for the Boston and Maine Railroad.

At the time of his death Mr. Butler was one of Overseers to be voted for on Commencement Day.
