HARVARD, 14; BROWN, 3.

The Nine Wins by Strong Batting in Two Innings.

The 'Varsity defeated Brown yesterday afternoon at Providence by a score of 14 to 3. The game brought out the best batting which the nine has shown this year, and if continued in the three remaining games, there is little doubt that the nine will successfully end a season, which started out with such poor prospects. Although during five different innings, Sedgwick pitched effective ball, in the third, with men on bases, he was hit at will for five runs. Woodworth was substituted in the eighth, when the 'Varsity again bunched enough hits to score four more runs.

The story of the game is that of the third and eighth innings. In the third McCornick made a double, the first hit of the game. Hayes and Laughlin followed with singles, and were in turn brought in by Sedgwick's wild pitch and Burgess's home run. Haughton was then hit by a pitched ball, but went out at second on a choice of plays, when Reid hit to the infield. Reid, however, was retired at second on a short hit by Robinson, who scored on Lewis's single and LeStages's error.

When Woodworth was substituted for Sedgwick in the eighth inning, Sears made a home run over the centre field fence, McCornick and Hayes doubles, and Laughlin a three bagger, before the first man had been put out. Further scoring was prevented by a double play by Bacon, Fultz and F. Croker. In the ninth, Robinson and Sears singled, and though the next two men struck out, a combination of errors and Laughlin's second triple scored Harvard's last runs.

Brown scored her first run on good base running, the second on Bacon's two bagger followed by Fultz's single, and the third on Gammon's home run.

The cheering of Brown's supporters even after Harvard had secured a strong lead, was admirable. A number of Harvard Freshmen accompanied the nine on the trip, and cheered heartily throughout the game. The nine was well entertained at the Providence Athletic Club.
