For several reasons it seems necessary for members of the University to make a gift of colors to the United States ship which has been given the name of Harvard. In the first place, it is a compliment for Harvard to be thus recognized by the Government, which calls for appreciation from the students. That the Government has taken this step, is a proof of the standing Harvard always has had and please God always will have, in every branch of the public service.

In the second place, a failure on the part of the University to return the compliment by a gift such as the one proposed, will incur criticism in no small degree. Lastly, it seems necessary to call a meeting and raise money for the colors, simply because so many men appreciate the strength of the reasons already given.

As mentioned in the announcement, it is important that the necessary amount be raised tongiht. Therefore, any men who are prevented from being present, should send their subscriptions by their friends, and no one who feels able to give tonight, should think it an equivalent to wait even twenty-four hours before subscribing.
