How many of those who go to drill back of the Gymnasium are looking at it as anything more than simply amusing, a happy suggestion to provide a little momentary excitement? If this question could be answered, we fear a large per cent. would be included in the number, and if there really were a war and a call for volunteers, that a great many would respond in the same spirit. There always have been such men, doubtless there were in '61, and think what a revulsion they must have had then. In fact it is one thing to take a matter cheerfully though seriouly, and another to consider everything a big joke.
Lieutenant Robinson said in his letter last week:- "In view of the conditions now existing, it would seem to be the duty of every young man, not having already acquired the knowledge, to perfect himself in the elements of the manual of arms." "The conditions now existing,"- we would ask those who have responded to the call to consider these, thinking that they may really be working for a purpose, but with the hope that conditions will soon be such as will enable Lieutenant Robinson to return and complete his term of teaching at Harvard.
