The 'Varsity defeated the College nine on Saturday afternoon in a regular nine inning game by a score of 10 to 1.
Taken all in all, the game brought out the best playing that has been seen on Holmes Field this season. Aside from four errors and a wild throw the 'Varsity played a remarkably steady fielding game. In the second inning, Laughlin, Haughton and McCornick made a neat double play, when Foster hit to Laughlin with Sears on first. Clark seemed to be a little off his form, although he reached first four times out of six at bat, three time on hits. His line drive for a home run past the willows was clearly the squarest hit made on the field this year.
At short, Laughlin covered his territory well, although he had comparatively few chances. McCornick also fielded well, making one assist and six put-outs with no errors.
The hitting of the 'Varsity was the hardest of the year; twelve hits being made to the College nine's three. Of this number, Rand and Ewer secured two-base hits; Burgess, Lynch and Lewis hit for three bases and Clark scored on a home-run.
Clements began pitching and was relieved by Ely during the third and fourth innings. Galbraith was then substituted for two innings the game being finished with Clements in the box. All had fair control of the ball, but were hit almost at will by the 'Varsity.
In the seventh inning Lynch made the star play of the game by catching a short fly off Pote's bat, after a long run from the outfield.
Today Lynch, Burgess, Rand, McCornick, Haughton, Clark, Laughlin, Chandler and Foster will be measured for suits. From these men the team that is to be taken on the southern trip will probably be chosen. No battery candidates will be measured at present, as the period of practice has not been sufficiently long to enable a final choice to be made for some time.
The make-up of the teams on Saturday follows:
'Varsity-Laughlin, s. s.; Rand, l. f.; Haughton, 2b.; Burgess, r. f.; Lynch, c. f.; Clark, 3b.; McCornick, 1b.; Davis, c.; Clements, Ely, Galbraith, p.
College Nine-Ewer, 3b.; Sears, l. f.; Foster, r. f.; Lewis, 1b.; Maguire, 2b.; Farrington, c. f.; Galbraith, s. s.; Buckman, Pote, c.
