All but one match has been played in the second round of the Newton indoor tennis tournament, and this match and the whole of the third round will be played today, bringing the tournament down to the semi-finals.
The best played match yesterday was that between L. E. Ware '99 and E. R. Marvin '99, which was close and exciting throughout. Both men played in the back of the court and got good length on their strokes.
Ware won the third set and match by his superior steadiness. The summary of the matches is as follows:
First round-A. Codman '96 beat A. P. Hawes by default; K. Horton '97 beat S. G. Small, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3; N. P. Hallowell, Jr., '97 beat H. Blanchard '98, 6-0, 6-5; P. W. Wrenn '94 beat A. G. Thatcher '97, 6-3, 6-3.
Second round-H. Ward 1900 beat A. S. Pier '95, 6-1, 6-3; L. E. Ware '99 beat E. R. Marvin '99, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3; Codman best Wrenn, 6-0, 6-1; Horton beat T. M. Shaw, '99, 6-3, 6-5.
The matches for today are as follows: W. M. Scudder '99 vs. C. R. Henderson, Jr., at 3; winner of Scudder-Henderson match vs. H. Ward 1900, at 4; L. E. Ware '99 vs. A. Codman '96, at 8.30.
