"A Door Opened," a collection of sermons by Alexander McKenzie, has been published by Houghton, Mifflin and Company. Dr. McKenzie presents in these sermons a pleasant and beautiful religion with no suggestion of the wrath of God. He does not ask us to be perfect, but to do our best, and his suggestions to this end are practical and sensible.
In judging a sermon or an oration as literature it must be remembered that it was not originally written to be read. It must be prepared with regard to its effect when delivered from the pulpit or the rostrum. Taking this fact into consideration, these sermons are readable to an unusual degree. Dr. McKenzie has departed somewhat from the conventional sermon, and he might do so to an even greater extent with benefit.
