Freshman crew candidates were called out on Wednesday, January 12. Sixty-eight men responded to the call. Of these 38 were from the academic department and 30 from the Sheffield Scientific School. The average weight of the candidates for the crew was 153 pounds. The men were quickly thinned out, those who were physically unable to endure the training being dropped. The work has consisted of running, light exercise in the gymnasium and regular rowing in the tank. Progress in mastering the stroke is of course very slow as the men with the exception of the few who rowed on the fall freshman crew are entirely without previous experience. Coach Cook, Captain Whitney and D. F. Rogers '98, have done most of the coaching up to this time but since the 'varsity crew candidates have been called out, J. O. Rodgers '98, who had charge of last year's freshman crew, has been given complete control. About thirty men remain from the last reduction in numbers and these give splendid prospect for a strong freshman crew this year. The readiness with which the fall freshman crew mastered the stroke as far as it was possible in so short a time, and the good showing they made in the fall regatta, augurs well for ultimate success.
Captain Whitney called out candidates for the University crew Thursday, January 27. It was not thought wise to start work until after the Junior Promenade. In response to the call 21 men presented themselves. Most of the men are in exceptionally good condition this year having had regular practice in the harbor during the fall term. The work during the fall consisted of the individual coaching of a few candidates in the pair-oars by Mr. Cook and later the use of the eight-oared barge. The work was very light and no long stretches were rowed, all rowing being done in the harbor inside of the bridge. Two innovations have been made in the University Crew tank this year: mirrors have been placed opposite each man in order that he may see himself row and correct his own faults, and the sliding seats have been replaced by fixed ones. The regular work of the candidates is similar to that of the freshmen. The men have been divided into two crews. The first crew is rowing as follows: Stroke, W. B. Williams 1900; 7, J. H. Niedecken 1900; 6, F. W. Allen 1900; 5, R. A. McGee 99 S.; 4, R. F. Flint '99S.; 3, J. P. Brock 1900; 2, P. Whitney '98: bow, D. F. Rogers '98. T. D. Hewitt '99 is stroking the second boat. The outlook is an exceptionally bright one because of the very strong freshman crew of last year, all the members of which are candidates for the University Crew.
