The plea published for funds to erect a gate at Harvard in memory of Marshall Newell will surely be liberally responded to. Marshall Newell's life though ended so early and so sadly stands before us as a type to arouse ambition. It was that of a man whose pleasure it was to live among men and to unselfishly forward their interests; who considered nothing done unless well done, nothing won unless by steadfast effort.
He entered college in '91 practically unknown. It may be truthfully said that at his death but seven years later, few were so universally known and loved by Harvard men. They will not permit his memory to fade, and among future generations the name of Marshall Newell will be respected and revered as it is today.
