Yesterday's memorial service in Appleton Chapel was an event of deeper significance than has occurred before in College for a long time. No one who was present could fail to be impressed by the simple sincerity with which the service was conducted and its thorough appropriateness.
The extent of Newell's influence, and the hold which he had upon men of every rank and every division of college life was forcibly demonstrated by the widely representative character of the assembly which took this opportunity to express their sorrow. The service was an indication of the silent far reaching power for good which lives with undiminished vitality after the death of such a man.
