Mr. Lehmann has given out the following satisfactory report of the work of the 'Varsity up to date:
"Since the crew took to their shell their improvement has been retarded by two causes. In the first place the shell used for last year's race was weak and twisted, and until it was abandoned in favor of the '99 shell the rowing was somewhat disorganized by the defects of the shell. In the second place, J. H. Perkins, probably in consequence of the weakness of the shell, strained his side and was forced to stay out of the crew for nearly three weeks. Since his return to the crew a fortnight ago, however, the improvement has been constant and the crew are now on the whole rowing very fairly together.
"There is still room for improvement in watermanship, that is in the capacity for keeping the boat level and rowing in good time under all circumstances of wind and water. The time on the starboard side is better than that on the port side, or rather the level of the oars is better on the feather and the finish is more uniform. There is considerable power in the crew and during the latter part of their practice they have shown good pace both for short and for long distances.
"The physical condition of the men is thoroughly satisfactory for this period of training, and unless they have some further unforeseen 'set-back,' they may be expected to show very great improvement in watermanship and racing ability."
