The proposition to institute a kind of Student Advisory Committee on Athletics is such an excellent plan, and one which contains so many possibilities of furthering the athletic interests of the University, if it is properly managed, that it deserves thorough and earnest consideration. It is, for obvious reasons, too late to form such an organization in what is left of this college year; but, if every student gets some idea of it as proposed, and has a chance to think it over during the summer, it will be much easier to go about its formation in an intelligent way next fall.

The real need for such a committee seems to exist in connection with the athletic teams; and here, without in the least hindering or interfering with the plans of the captains and coaches, there are many ways in which a committee of representative students can both be of assistance to the latter and can centralize, make effective and increase undergraduate support of the various teams. It is of the highest importance that the powers of such a body be limited so as not to restrict any of the captains or coaches in any way, in the actual management of their teams; for the 'Varsity captains are certainly the men best fitted for their positions in every case, and any such restriction coming from others would be sure to result in the worst kind of mismanagement. In other ways, however, such as the providing for leaders of cheering at games and at the departure of teams for contests away from Cambridge; in taking charge of athletic celebrations, and in the investigation of such affairs as the recent painting of the John Harvard statue; in looking out for the reception of visiting teams; in caring for the Trophy Room in the Gymnasium; and in plenty of similar ways a committee could easily justify its existence. It could also give captains and their advisers the backing of the University in dealing with the Athletic Committee, for one of the essential features of such an institution should and unquestionably would be that it be chosen by a vote of the whole University.

Believing that such a committee of students could only be a success if thoroughly representative of the whole University, we urge upon all to think the matter over as carefully as possible. We also ask for communications on the subject, and shall be glad to publish all which contain good suggestions or throw any new light on the question.
