NEW HAVEN, May 3, 1897.
The Easter trip of the baseball nine through the South proved successful, only one game being lost and five won. The defeat was suffered at the hands of the University of Virginia, but was redeemed by Yale's defeating Virginia in the following game. Yale's victory over Brown on Saturday by the score of 6-2 gives increased confidence in the nine. The Freshman baseball nine, however, at present seems rather weak and they have already met with several defeats.
A few important changes have taken place in the University and Freshman crews. J. H. Simpson, who has been stroking the crew all the season, has stopped rowing and Langford has been moved from seven to take his place. Two Freshmen, Greenway and Allen, have now been given places in the boat. At present the crew is rowing as follows: Stroke, Langford; 7, Griswold; 6, Greenway; 5, Bailey; 4, Allen; 3, Campbell; 2, Whitney, and bow, D. Rogers. The order of the Freshman crew is: Stroke, Williams; 7, Greenleaf; 6, McGee; 5, Cross; 4, Niedecken; 3, Brock, captain; 2, Flint; bow, Simons. On Friday the University crew rowed over a four-mile course on time.
The annual spring games of the Y. A. A., held April 29, showed the weakness of the team in several events. Most of the records were below the average, but this was partly due to the cold weather and strong wind which prevailed. The loss of several sure point-winners by the scholarship rule weakness the team considerably.
The Eastern trip of the Glee and Banjo Clubs proved a marked success. The clubs visited Old Point Comfort, Washington, Plainfield and Jersey City. While in Washington, by the invitation of President McKinley, the clubs gave a concert in the White House, at which the members and ladies of the Cabinet were present, as well as the Vice-President and other State officers. The concert in New York on April 30 in Carnegie Hall was very well attended and proved a marked success.
The Yale Corinthian Yacht Club has been opened and the half-raters have been received by their owners. The first race was scheduled for May 1, but owing to the weather was postponed. In the weekly races of the half-raters a pennant will be given to the winner of each race, and points will be given to the first four boats to finish toward a cup to be awarded to the half-rater winning the greatest number of points.
Among the changes in the courses of instruction for next year the English department especially deserves mention. The services of a new instructor have been procured, and, though the course of instruction for the two lower classes will not be materially changed, several extra courses are offered to Juniors and Seniors.
