JUNIORS ARE CHAMPIONS.

Ninety-eight Wins the Class Championship from Ninety-nine.

The Junior nine won the class baseball championship yesterday afternoon by defeating the Sophomores 6 to 4. The game was most exciting all through and in point of good all-round playing was probably the best of the series. Both teams had to play hard for their runs, most of which were made by the bunching of hits at the proper time, and at no point in the game was the result at all certain. The fielding of both sides was fairly good, although '98 had few chances as compared with '99. As Hayes had pitched the two preceding games for '98, it was expected that possibly he would weaken, but he proved stronger than before, and at critical tiems, with the bases full, showed remarkable steadiness. Besides getting fifteen strike-outs, he made a star play in the last inning by fielding a slow bunted ball to first, making the third out for '99. Brown also played well for '98, and Haskell accepted one very difficult chance.

Ninety-nine was strongest at the bat, and of their seven hits three were triples. Simpson and Nowell fielded their positions well.

The Juniors made their first two runs in the third inning on two base-hits by Manning and Edmunds, assisted by McCall's wild throw and Stearn's error. There was no more scoring done by either side until the seventh, when '98 hit Galbraith at will for six singles, which scored four runs.

Ninety-nine got one in the seventh on Mill's triple, followed by McCall's single and two more in the eighth on hits by Thompson and McCall. One run was scored in the ninth. Simpson hit safely for three bases and later was brought in on a single by Jameson.
