NEW HAVEN, May 17, 1897.

The result of the dual games Saturday was a surprise to the university at large. It was generally thought that the result would be extremely close, and the impression was that Harvard was the more probable victor. Many of the Yale men, also, surpassed their own previous records, as was particularly the case with Merwin in the high jump. Thus the showing of the team gives far greater hope of success in the intercollegiate games than has been heretofore entertained. Great satisfaction was also caused by Yale's victory over Brown in baseball on the same day.

The university crew squad has been reduced to ten men, while eleven are rowing with the Freshman crew. The race with the University of Wisconsin will take place May 29, provided the Wisconsin management is able to raise funds sufficient for their eastern trip. The university crew will probably go to New London about June 1, and the freshman crew will follow about the 10th. A new crew has been organized in the university and plans have been made by which it will enter the regatta of the Harlem Boat Club in New York City on May 31. The crew is made up mainly from men who rowed on the second university crew, but will enter the regatta simply as a crew of college men having no connection whatever with the Yale Navy. This Harlem regatta is an open event, and the Columbia University crew and the University of Pennsylvania crew have already signified their intention of entering. The captain of the crew from Yale is S. Patterson '97.

The loss of the Princeton debate was felt as a great disappointment here and has given rise to the discussion of a custom which seems to have arisen at Yale-that is, whether or not a man should take part in more than one intercollegiate debate, either in the same year or even in different years. The present custom seems to be that a man should take part in one intercollegiate debate, only, and this policy is not considered to be beneficial to the University.
