PRINCETON WINS.

Harvard Nine Loses Through Inability to Bunch Hits.

Princeton defeated Harvard on Saturday in a well played but one sided game. Except in the fifth inning, when Princeton hit Paine pretty hard and Harvard made two costly errors, the game was quickly and sharply played, Princeton winning through bunching her hits, and through Harvard's inability to hit Wilson safely.

For Princeton, Wilson pitched a careful and steady game. He struck out only one man, but gave no bases on balls, and kept the hits well scattered. In the 9th inning he let up a little and Harvard secured her three runs then.

Paine on the whole, pitched a strong game, but weakened perceptibly at a critical monent, allowing Princeton to bunch her hits in the 5th inning.

It was Harvard's batting that was fatally weak. Only Beale struck out, but the hits were scattered, and only once did two come in the same inning. The weakness of the batting shows in the fact that not until the 9th inning did Harvard get a man beyond second, and only three times before the last inning was a Harvard man on first base.

In fielding Harvard played much better, with the exception of two costly mistakes by Stevenson and Paine. Her work was quick and sharp, but showed a serious shortcoming that has been apparent before,- the opportunities for double plays were not accepted.

The story of the game really reduces itself to an account of the 5th and 9th. In Princeton's half of the 5th one man got out quickly. Then Bradley knocked an easy grounder to Stevenson, who threw too high for Haughton to reach, Bradley going to second. Paine threw past Dean and Bradley got to third. Easton was hit, stole second, and then he and Bradley both scored on Altman's single. Two more hits followed and then a base on balls. A sacrifice hit brought home a run and then Princeton went out on Kelly's failure to reach home.

Harvard did not come near scoring until the 9th inning, when she made a last desperate effort. Paine hit safely, Rand got to first on a fumble of a sharp hit to shortstop and Haughton filled the bases by another single. On an error by Smith, Scannell reached first and Paine scored. Then came a passed ball and Rand ran in. Stevenson followed with a single, Scannell was out at second, but Haughton scored. Burgess went to first on a dead ball, but Dean retired the side by a weak grounder.
