OBITUARY.

John Lowell '43.

John Lowell, '43, the distinguished lawyer and judge, died at his home in Brookline early yesterday morning. He was born in Boston in 1824. After graduating from Harvard in 1843, he took a two years' course in the Law School, and in 1846 he was admitted to the Suffolk bar.

Judge Lowell began practice in Boston, associated with William Sohier. In 1865 he was made judge of the District Court of the United States by President Lincoln, and in 1878 he was appointed justice of the circuit court. In 1884 he returned te general practice and became the leading authority in the United States on all questions of bankruptcy and insolvency.

Judge Lowell was president of the Peabody Fund Trustees and a member of the Taxation Committee.
