Obviously the present arrangement by which the dates set for the boat race and Class Day conflict is unsatisfactory to all concerned; for unless it is remedied the crew will not be well supported at Poughkeepsie, or else there will not be many undergraduates at the Class Day exercises or else, as is probable, neither the race nor Class day will receive all the attention that it deserves.
Another plan suggested by the Class Day committee is to change the race from Friday to Thursday and then to bring the Senior dance and the baseball game with Yale on Friday and Class Day proper on Saturday. The great objection to this plan is of course from the standpoint of the crew. It has already been discussed so much that it seems unnecessary to do so again. It may be summed up, however, by saying that the time spent at New London or Poughkeepsie, has been found by experience to be of such importance in putting the finishing touches on the crews and in getting them ready to make the best showing possible, that the last available day for the race is therefore chosen. It will be remembered that on account of the race of July 2, Friday, the twentyfifth, is the last day on which Cornell can row against Harvard and Yale.
The only remaining way of settling the difficulty and the only one which brings with it no real disadvantages is to leave the date of the race as it is and to change Class Day from Friday to Thursday. The loss of the Senior dance can be endured because it has never been held and it is not known whether it would be a success. The Yale game set for Thursday can probably be changed to the day before. And the traditions as to the date of Class Day are surely of minor importance beside those of the exercises themselves. The CRIMSON, therefore urges the Seniors to adopt this plan.
In this way alone will it be possible to have the usual crowd present on Class Day and to get the most Harvard men to the race at Poughkeepsie.
