NEW HAVEN, March 8, 1897.

Now that the final settlement of the athletic negotiations with Harvard has been announced increased enthusiasm is shown by candidates for the various teams. The university crew rows on the harbor daily and is at present being coached by Mr. Robert J. Cook. The crew training table has been started and the following men taken: Simpson, Langford, Bailey, D. F. Rogers, Mills, Whitney, Marsh, Campbell, Parkhurst and Patterson. The freshman crew squad has been reduced to 23 candidates. Some of these row on the harbor daily in an eight-oared barge. The baseball candidates are doing the customary cage work and have been coached recently by Mr. W. F. Carter. The candidates for the track team are in preparation for the Y. A. A. winter games to be held March 13.
The Yale Corinthian Yacht Club has elected S. D. Babcock '97 commodore. A special cup is to be offered this year for the newly organized half-rater class. The club hopes to bring about a revival of the usual spring races with Harvard, but as Yale now holds the cup contested for at former regattas, a challenge must be awaited.
The exact text of the will of the late William Lampson has been announced. It provides that $15.000 be given to the university for the construction of a building for public exercises, to be called "Lampson Lyceum." The remainder of the estate goes to establish the "Lampson Fund," the income of which will be used for the endowment of professorships in Latin, Greek and English Literature.
