Charles Ziba Smith, of the class of '94, died January 4, 1897, at Ashfield, Massachusetts. He was born April 5, 1871, at Ashfield, the son of Houghton Ziba Smith and Sarah Howes. He obtained his early education under great difficulties, working on his father's farm and walking ten miles daily to school. He graduated from Ames Academy, Shelburne Falls, and passed the Harvard examinations for the class of '95. At college he continued the same quiet and industrious manner of life, studying hard and making few friends. He graduated in three years, joining '94 only a day or two before Commencement. In the autumn of 1894 he went to Brooklyn as clerk in the law office of Grout, De Ferr and Mayer, and likewise attended the New York Law School. In November, 1895, he suffered from an attack of spinal disease, which necessitated an operation. Though the result was successful, he returned to his work too soon, underwent a relapse, and was confined for five months in the Brooklyn City Hospital. In May, 1896, he was removed to his home at Ashfield, where he remained until his death.

In behalf of the class of '94, we wish to extend to his parents and his friends our sympathy with them in their bereavement, believing that it is such a life as his, a life of resolute though unapplauded self-sacrifice, which brings real honor to Harvard.
