There was not room enough in Sever 11 to seat the audience yesterday afternoon at Mr. Copeland's introductory lecture on "Dr. Johnson and his friends." Mr. Copeland explained the purpose and extent of the course before passing on to an account of Samuel Johnson. For the two best lives of Johnson he referred to Lesley Steven and Boswell.
He then gave a description of Dr. Johnson's personal appearance and customs; and an account of his early youth, together with a picture of London and the state of affairs in England when Johnson went to the capitol, and sought the patronage of Lord Chesterfield. He ended the lecture by reading passages from Johnson's letters and other works.
