YALE LETTER.

Review of the Work in Preparation for the Debate.

NEW HAVEN, CONN., Nov. 30, 1897.- Much care has been taken in the development of the Yale team which is to meet Harvard this year in debate. The manner of coaching has been as follows:

Preliminary trials were first held in the several departments of the University and from these trials the few best men were selected to compete in a general debate. The Academic department entered eight men; the Scientific, two; the Theological School, two; and the Law School, three. Professor Hadley, Professor Phelps, and Judge Baldwin picked out the following men whom they considered as doing best in this trial: H. W. Fisher '98, J. K. Clark '99, H. A. Jump '99 T. S., and F. E. Richardson '98. These four men were drilled together and the final team has only lately been chosen, F. E. Richardson being made alternate.

In the work of preparation briefs for the affirmative and negative were drawn up and the different parts of the subject were given to each man to work up separately. After each man had developed the work allotted to him the regular debates were held and former debaters were called into criticise the men.

Professor A. T. Hadley, Mr. E. V. Raynolds and Mr. C. W. Wells have coached the team and members of the Yale Union have from time to time debated against the speakers in order to give them more practice in rebuttal.

The coaching has been nearly all in the line of destructive criticism and naturally the debaters have had no easy task to accomplish. They have, however, worked faithfully and hard and should be in the best possible form when they meet Harvard on Friday evening.
