The Prospect Union has started its sixth year of educational work in Cambridgeport with its customary commendable plans and also, unfortunately, its old lack of funds with which to put those plans into satisfactory operation.
The student-workingmen are, as in past years, organized into classes which cover a broad field of study. Especial attention will be paid this year to more thoroughly systematizing the courses and it is hoped that it will be possible to give diplomas for three or four years of satisfactory work.
A legacy of $20,000 from Miss Randall has decidedly improved the finances of the Union, but one-half of this legacy must be used to pay off a mortgage on the Union building. The other half will form a fund for running expenses. The financial prospects of the Union, however, are as yet far from satisfactory.
Teachers for the coming winter are now being engaged. All college men who wish to teach evening classes should apply to F. W. Palfrey at 22 Grays, between 10 and 11, and until October 11th, or to Rev. R. E. Ely, Prospect Union Building, 744 Mass. avenue, daily except Monday and Saturday from 12 to 1 and from 2 to 3 p. m. The classes will meet for one hour weekly, except during vacation, from October 11th to May 1st.
The officers for the coming year are: President, Rev. R. E. Ely; secretary, H. I. Bowditch '98; treasurer, P. M. Hubbard '98; chairman common classes, F. W. Palfrey '98.
