New Admission Requirements.

During the past year the Faculty has been engaged on a revision of the requirements for admission to Harvard College and to the Lawrence Scientific School. In a few studies of the present list no change is proposed; in most, the definition of the requirement has been carefully revised. In the examinations of 1898 and thereafter until the new definitions are exclusively in force, alternative papers will be offered under the new definitions in Greek, Latin, German, French, History, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.

The most important changes are as follows:

Greek-Elementary examination divided into two parts, the first a translation of simple Attic prose, and the second a thorough examination on a prescribed portion of Xenophon; advanced examination will not contain the Herodotus alternative for Homer as at present.

Latin-Elementary examination divided into two parts, the first a translation of simple verse and prose, and the second a thorough examination on a prescribed portion of Cicero; for the advanced examination the Lives of Nepos and the Verses of Ovid are added to the Cicero and Virgil required at present.

History-In preparing for the modern history examination, English History is to be read with due reference to social and political development, and American History with regard to the elements of Civil Government. Four examinations are to be offered in advanced history, as follows: 1, Greek History to destruction of Corinth, and Roman History to death of Constantine; 2, English and American History; 3, European History from the Germanic conquests to the 17th centuay; 4, a year's study of any one of the four historical fields defined under Elementary History.
