Yesterday afternoon about forty men responded to Captain Rand's call for candidates, and from this number two nines were picked to play against each other. All of the old men of last year's nine were out, with the exception of Dean, Paine, Scannell and Beale, who have graduated, and Haughton, who is playing with the football team. The remaining candidates were made up for the most part of men who have played on their class teams together with about ten freshmen. The play as a rule was very loose but several good plays were made by Ewer, Clark, Loughlin and Beardsell. The two nines were captained by Burgess and Chandler and were made up as follows: Davis, Slade, c., Morse, Rumery, p.; Stearns, 1b.; Beardsell, 2b.; Ewer, 3b.; Laughlin, s. s.; Sears, l. f.; Lynch, c. f.; Burgess, r. f.
Slade, Egbert, c.; Holt, McCormick, p.; Foster, 1b.; Sampson, Chandler, 2b.; Clark, 3b.; Coolidge, s. s.; McCall, Rand, l. f.; Bolles, c. f.; Ladd, r. f.
The nine captained by Burgess won in seven innings by the score of 15-7. The next practice will be Monday afternoon.
