With the exception of the backs, the 'Varsity yesterday afternoon was practically made up of the substitute eleven, Doucette being the only man in the line who belonged to the 'Varsity proper. Bouve, was laid up with an injury to his knee sustained in the West Point game, while Cabot, Moulton, Shaw, Donald and Wheeler were given a day off to recuperate from the effects of the hard work of the past few days.
Both teams were rather weak on the defensive, the 'Varsity, however, having a shade the worst of it in this respect, as both of the second's touchdowns were made in simple end plays which Lewis and Richardson failed to break up. Swain and Mills did good work in the line. Swain was used to great advantage as a ground gainer; he was active in breaking through and opened large holes for his backs. His playing throughout was very aggressive and sharp, and was by far the best work done by the first eleven. Sawin made several good runs, got into the plays with a great deal of life and tackled fiercely. Warren was tried at fullback and showed up fairly well. On both sides there was a lamentable lack of interference, and although the playing was sharp and hard, there was not enough method in the running of the backs. Garrison went in at quarter during the last few minutes of play and succeeded in livening the men up considerably. He tackled strongly and helped his backs very materially in the interference.
For the second eleven, Wadsworth and Brown both made sensational runs and gained nearly all the ground for their side. Twice Wadsworth ran around Richardson's end without interference for 35 and 20 yards, making a touchdown in the latter play. The last touchdown for the second was made by Wadsworth on a run around Richardson's end, after Brown on receiving a punt had run 55 yards without interference.
