In spite of the bard rain on Tuesday, the courts on Jarvis Field were in good condition yesterday, and all but three matches in the preliminary and first rounds of the tennis tournament were played off.

The matches between H. H. Shaw '99 and C. Whitbeck 1900, and H. Ward 1900 and W. D. Brownell 3L., were both well played and very close. Brownell played particularly well and won the first set from Ward without much difficulty. Ward braced up, however, after this and pulled out the match by superior steadiness and good driving.

The other matches for the most part were poorly played, the men showing a great lack of practice.
