There is a fact connected with this fall's work in rowing which is of considerable interest to any one familiar with Harvard boating last year. The members of last spring's Weld crew, are, almost without exception, rowing with the 'Varsity squad. They are of course still far from being finished oarsmen, but they have been rewarded for their steady training in the scrub crew, by being given the opportunity to profit by 'Varsity coaching. It is even possible that some of them may row on the 'Varsity in the spring.
It is to be remembered that at the beginning of the Weld Club's activity most if not all of these men were inexperienced, and in fact unable to make their class crews.
A better proof of the practical possibilities of the Weld system, could hardly be sought. Any student who has any ambition to row should feel encouraged to try for a Weld crew, knowing that he will receive plenty of instruction, whatever his ability, or lack of ability may be.
The advisability of continuing this system of breaking in new material is obvious. Thus far, however, little has been done, and we hope to see an awakening very shortly. Last year's energy was commendable. This year it is imperative that the same energy be sustained. The great opportunity for bringing success to Harvard rowing lies just here. The preparatory school, where any man can learn the rudiments must be kept in efficient working order, not simply for one season, but permanently. Thus, and thus only, can the 'Varsity coaches be supplied each year with a satisfactory lot of candidates who can be worked up into a good crew.
