The '98 squad has not been given any very hard practice as yet. Yesterday a first eleven was formed and different sets of backs ran through signals against the second. The lineup at first was as follows: l. e., Wood; l. t., A. H. Rice, l. g., Richards; c., Stone; r. g., Thayer; r. t., Jordan; r. e., J. C. Rice; q. b., Vincent; l. h. b., Adams; r. h. b., Riggs; f. b., Emmons. Later in the practice these backs were changed, Grilk, Hastings and Flint going in with F. J. Goodridge at quarter.

Ninety-eight has lost two of her last year's backs, as Manning has not returned to college and Scull is not coming out. Besides these, J. L. Valentine, who has played at quarter the last two years, will not join the squad this season. There seems to be some promising new material, however, as both Adams and Riggs, substitute tackles on last year's eleven, are showing up promisingly back of the line; and a strong though somewhat inexperienced rusher has been found in Grilk, who is playing with the squad this year for the first time. It is expected that Hennen, Holmes and Marvin of last year's eleven will soon come out regularly. They will prove valuable accessories to the squad.
