The Freshman football men made a good response yesterday to the call for candidates for their eleven. This is the first occasion upon which the class spirit of Nineteen Hundred and One has been tested, and the whole University is interested in having the class meet this first test well, espeially as the freshman elevens of the last three years have been so successful. The number of candidates is about as large as can be expected; and now that so few Freshmen are kept on the 'Varsity squad, most of the good football men will be with their class squad and the standard of play should be high for a freshman team. Much depends on the way in which the men start in on their work: if a class is half-hearted and careless at first, as was the case with last year's freshmen, it will have that reputation to work against for the rest of the season; while if it goes to work with plenty of life at the outset the task is made easier both for the coaches and for the members of the squad. With practically the whole football strength of Nineteen Hundred and One in the class squad there is a double incentive for the men to do well: the hope of being transferred to the 'Varsity squad as well as the prospect of making the Freshman eleven. Under these circumstances we may expect to see the Freshmen go at their work with the proper amount of energy and stick to it through the whole season.
