The success of the chess team in the intercollegiate chess tournament held during the recess is very gratifying. Coming after the defeat of Princeton in debate just before the holidays it seems to strengthen the belief, with which some of us have endeavored to console ourselves after athletic defeats, that in contests of brain rather than of muscle Harvard usually wins.

The victory this year is more than ordinarily pleasing. It brings the trophy cup to Harvard for the third successive year. The team won a decisive victory by taking ten out of twelve games played and the two members of the team made the two highest individual scores. This good record was made entirely without the coaching of chess experts.

The team is the same that represented Harvard last year. It has had the rare honor of twice winning for Harvard in intercollegiate contests and deserves the thanks of the University for its success in these matches. We congratulate the members of the team most heartily.
