The fifth annual intercollegiate chess tournament held at the Columbia Grammar School, New York, beginning on Monday, Dec. 28, ended Saturday afternoon, and resulted in a sweeping victory for Harvard.

Harvard's representatives were E. E. Southard '97 and A. W. Ryder '97; Yale's, F. A. Lehlbach and W. W. Murdoch; Princeton's, E. B. Seymour and W. W. Young; and Columbia's, A. W. Parker and A. M. Price. Mr. Eugene Delmar acted as referee, and T. R. Stark of Columbia was director of play. A number of chess experts were present at the tournament.

On Monday, Dec. 28, after an address of welcome by B. H. Campbell, principal of the Columbia Grammar School, the men began the first round of games. Ryder (H) defeated Parker (C), Queen's Gambit Declined. Seymour (P) defeated Lehlbach (Y), Ru Lopez. Price (C) defeated Young (P), French Defence. The game between Murdoch (Y) and Southard (H), Ruy Lopez Opening, was decided by the referee in favor of Southard. Score-Harvard 2, Princeton 1, Columbia 1, Yale 0.

On the second day of the tournament, Lehlbach (Y) defeated Parker (C), Queen's Gambit Declined. Ryder (H) defeated Seymour (P), Ruy Lopez. Southard (H) defeated Price (C), Dutch Game. Murdoch (Y) defeated Young (P), French Defence. Score-Harvard 4, Yale 2, Princeton 1, Columbia 1.

On Wednesday, Ryder (H) defeated Lehlbach (Y), Counter Centre Gambit. Murdoch (Y) defeated Price (C), Ruy Lopez. Southard (H) defeated Young (P), Scotch Gambit. The game between Parker (C) and Seymour (P), Dutch Opening, was adjudicated as a victory for Seymour. Score-Harvard 6, Yale 3, Princeton 2, Columbia 1.

The following day, Southard (H) defeated Parker (C), King's Gambit Declined. Price (C) defeated Ryder (H), Scotch Gambit. The games between Young (P) and Lehlbach (Y), Scotch Gambit, and between Seymour (P) and Murdoch (Y), Ruy Lopez, were both drawn. Score-Harvard 7, Yale 4, Princeton 3, Columbia 2.

On Friday, the fifth day of the tournament Parker (C) defeated Murdoch (Y), Ponxiani Opening. Young (P) defeated Ryder (H), French Defence. Price (C) defeated Lehlbach (Y), Ruy Lopez. Southard (H) defeated Seymour (P). Score-Harvard 8, Yale 4, Princeton 4, Columbia 4.

The final games, on Saturday, resulted as follows: Young (P) defeated Parker (C), Scotch Gambit. Ryder (H) defeated Murdoch (Y), King's Bishop's Opening. Southard (H) defeated Lehlbach (Y), King's Bishop's Opening. Seymour (P) and Price (C) played a drawn game.
