be scarified on account of the easily avoidable misconduct of a few individuals.

The second objection, that the football clothes are offensive has still less weit. Judge Holmes, in speaking of the Harvard men who fought for their country said that "the greatest qualities after all are those of the man, not those of the gentleman." Backed by this eminent authority I protest with all the emphasis in the power of one who clings fondly to the few remaining occasions in Harvard life which call for a display of sentiment, that the Tree scrimmage should no be abolished for such a purely fastidious reason. If the smell of perspiration has been "nauseating" to the few people who happen to stand by when the successful "rusher" presented his crimson rose to "some other fellow's sister," the improved exits will hereafter enable the few to stand aloof, and leave to the many the enjoyment of an institution which they hold dear. The custom is sentimental; the behavior of the gentlemen is just as inelegant about the "Tree" as it is on the football field; but nevertheless should the Corporation put it to a vote of the Seniors, of the whole University, or of the graduates, I predict that each of these bodies will declare with practical unanimity against the total abolition of the scrimmage. Even if fastidiousness is not encouraged too much at Harvard today, I think most of us feel that the display of wholesome sentiment is encouraged too little. The Corporation, I am sure, will not use their authority to ride rough-shod over the wishes of the vast majority of those most concerned in this matter. They will not destroy that which we regard as an institution, without having previously determined by an accurate vote that they have convinced a fair sized minority of us that it should be abolished. It seems not to be asking too much, therefore, that in this instance they permit a referendum to the Seniors or to the University at large.
