General Caspar Crowninshield died Sunday at his home in Boston.
He graduated from Harvard in the class of '60, rowing bow in the 'varsity crew of that year, and being regarded as one of the best oarsmen of his day. On July 10, 1861, he entered the Twentieth Massachusetts Infantry as captain, but changed to the cavalry and became a captain of the First Massachusetts Cavalry. Captain Crownishield became major of the Second Massachusetts Cavalry in 1863, and succeeded Colonel Charles Russell Lowell as commander of the regiment Oct. 21, after the latter's death at Cedar Creek. On March 13. 1865, Colonel Crowninshield was brevetted brigadier general "for gallant and meritorious conduct during the war," and on June 16 he resigned from the army.
General Crowninshield had lived in Boston since the war. He was a prominent member of the Loyal Legion.
