NEW YORK, May 29.- The trial heats in all the field events in the intercollegiate games and all the track events except the mile walk and mile run were contested yesterday. The track was not very fast owing to the rains last night, but the times in several events were fairly good.
E. F. Davidson, of Rochester, surprised everyone by his good work in the half and the quarter. The unexpected also happened in the failure of the Harvard quarter-mile runners to get a place in the finals.

As only eight men appeared for the 120 and 220 yards hurdles there were no trial heats this afternoon. They will be run off tomorrow.
Stephen Chase of Dartmouth, the world's champion hurdler will not be able to take part in the contest as he injured his foot during the New England Intercollegiate Meeting last Wednesday.
